Listen before fixing
Start with: ‘Do you want me to listen, help you make a plan, or both?’ Feeling understood often comes before problem-solving.
For parents and caregivers
EmotionalTeen is built for teens. This page helps adults support the experience without taking it over.
Start with: ‘Do you want me to listen, help you make a plan, or both?’ Feeling understood often comes before problem-solving.
Ask what expectations feel motivating and what feels impossible. Be willing to change the plan when sleep, health or safety is suffering.
Ask what online spaces give and take away. Build boundaries together instead of assuming every problem comes from a screen.
Persistent withdrawal, major sleep or eating changes, hopelessness, self-harm talk, or not feeling safe need prompt professional attention.
Ask directly and calmly whether your teen is thinking about hurting themselves. Asking does not put the idea in their head. Stay with them, reduce access to immediate danger and contact crisis or emergency support.
